Bal Thackrey

Pune has contributed remarkably to the political sector of the country. Politicians from Pune belonging to different parties have been people's representatives at local, state as well as national level.

Perhaps one of Pune's best known politicians is Bal Thackeray, though few would think of him as a Pune politician. Born in Pune, in 1926, he was the son of Keshav Sitaram Thackeray. Bal Thackeray founded the Shiv Sena party. He died in 2012 and was given a state funeral.

Sharad Pawar is another Pune politician who is more associated with Baramati, his constituency. Born Sharad Govindrao Pawar in 1940, he has been the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and an Indian Government Minister of Defence and Minister of Agriculture. He founded the nationalist Congress Party. He also served as the Chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India from 2005 to 2008 and as the president of the International Cricket Council from 2010 to 2012.

Anil Shirole of the BJP is also an active politician of Pune. He was elected as the MP of Pune in the 2014 elections. Earlier he has also served as a Corporator of the Pune Municipal Corporation and as the president of BJP, Pune City.

One of the famous politicians belonging to Indian National Congress in Pune is Suresh Kalmadi. Formerly an Indian Air Force pilot, Kalmadi became the president of Indian Youth Congress in 1977. During his career, he has taken charge of various posts like Member of Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of state for Railways, Spokesperson of Congress and so on. For many years he was in charge of the Indian Olympic Association. Suresh Kalmadi was in charge of the Commonwealth Youth Games, held in Pune.

Arun Bhatia: is the President of People's Guardian Party. He was an IAS officer and the Municipal Commissioner of the Pune Municipal Corporation before he entered politics. He was very popular as the Municipal Commissioner but has not yet managed to succeed in politics.

A popular politician from the past is Vitthalrao Gadgil, who was a Congress leader from Pune and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980. He served as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting.

An important woman politican of Pune is Vandana Chavan, a leading politician of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). She represents Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha in Delhi. She was also the elected Mayor of Pune from March 1997-98.

Apart from these stand-out politicians, there are a number of politicians who impact the city of Pune. Prakash Javadekar was born in Pune and is currently the Indian Government Minister for Information & Broadcasting. He studied B.Com and worked in the Bank of Maharashtra for 10 years.
